Reduced to 35 overs which is neither here nor there and so was the 'sides batting!

Rather damp on arrival but playable, with a bit of work before the scheduled 1:00pm start. Between 12:30 and 13:00, the rain came again and more than a bit of work was needed. Baldy Bowdry and the smaller mopper were in use along with forks and light roller and after a further inspection by the umpires at 13:40, providing there was no further rain; the start was scheduled for 14:30 with overs reduced to 35 each innings. Royton won the toss and elected to field.
Ronnie Venger and the Jagster opened: their combined age being less than Danny’s. Both didn’t last long, experiencing the “you miss I hit” approach from the bowler. So, both Swampy and Harrie were in there early and looked to build a score. The problem was the wicket which took movement off the seam and both grip and bounce from both quicker and slower bowlers.
Swampy was progressing nicely with 38 from 51 including six fours despite the slow outfield. Until a ball gripped and bounced and caught him in the nadgers. With tears still in his eyes he wafted at the next ball and was caught behind much to his relief as he walked off in the style of John Wayne.
Harrie saw Immy and Danny come and go and finished on 38 or was it 42 or 44 depending on whether you count shots that clear the boundary sixes or fours. The scoring, yet again, left batsmen frustrated. After that, it was a steady procession to 131 all out with Royton pro, Khuranga, picking up a five-for.
The best bit of the day: tea.
Warby opened with Drew, by then your correspondent had retreated to viewing from a warm house, as the wind was northerly and the temperature a cracking 14c. They bowled 13 overs between them losing 67 runs for 1 wicket, before Swampy decided to try spin. It is only my opinion, but if this match was for the winning, taking the pace off the ball and doing something different from the start was the only option. Opening with the spin twins might just have put pressure on Royton who rely heavily on their Pro who is class, most other shots seen were hikes over cow.
There were few highlights: Royton’s numerous dropped catches meant we were not bowled out for less than 100; Swampy’s innings until ball made contact with ball; Harry’s sixes; and Immy’s 1 for 20 from 10 overs. Ron Avenger suffered from “one-shot” Jewell’s cow corner sixes but by then neither had enough to bowl at.
Next Saturday is Friarmere – oh joy oh bliss…..
