1st Xi v Werneth (Wood Cup Prel Rnd) - 6th May 2017

As is often the case, early season in Moorside the wind blows from the Urals (mountains that is) with grey sky and no sun to speak of,. taking photos in gloves and cap it was hard to hold the camera still. Moorside won the toss and batted. Danny chased a wide one and was caught behind for 10, Skipper Swampy joined Jack G and they put on 60 before Jack played across a straight one and was bowled for 24. Enter the G-man and after a swish at the first ball he settled down. Swampy was fined heavily for 50-avoidance bowled for 49. Immy Khan next hung around and the singles flowed until he chipped won back to the bowler. And so, on debut, Ronnie Venger (predictive text again!) strolled in looking like he had played in England all his life. Gerrie and he put on 107 until Gerrie was caught at wide cover boundary attempting his fifth six. In came Sneaky Taylor fresh from his 50 n/o last week and between them Ron and he reached 262 from the 50 overs. Tea....
The added excitement of a cup comp is the free-hit on a no-ball and Drew overstepped obligingly 9 times. However, Werneth were not able to exploit the free hits in the same way as Mr Snyman. To cut what became a rather long and at times dull story short. Jamie Taylor bowled out of his skull taking 2/11 from 10, Drew picked up a couple, the G-man 1 and Immy 2. (Craig) Monksey had a stormer behind the sticks wearing his Hannibal Lector helmet and picked up 3 stumpings and a catch. Oh and I forgot Ron Avenger (bloody text prediction again) brought on last bowled 3.4 overs of leggies and picked up a 3-for as well as taking the catch of the season (so far) to give Drew his second wicket in his second spell.
